Whew. Thanks. I feel so much better now. Republicans can stop worrying--or heaven forbid, even thinking--about retooling their shrinking party's policies for a modern era of unprecedente demographic change . . . because policies and demography have absolutely nothing to do with winning or losing elections these days?!

So let me get this straight: You are advocating that we simpy crouch behind the eroding barricades, holding hands and singing uplifting hymns, while we wait for the arrival of this great savior 'who can articulate an alternative'? Hm. Doesn't sound like a Republican to me--sounds like another party. Sounds, actually, like a suicide cult. But you wanna know the saddest part of your world view? You're probably right in the end. America is sadly becoming a place where people are so intellectually lazy, so uninformed, so frightened of change, so sated on junk food and junk ideas, that they actually prefer not to think for themselves anymore: it's too hard. They'd rather bask like blubbery sea-cows under the warm, delusional sun of huckster-politicians. I wonder where our nation of tough-minded, independent-thinking, self-reliant individualists went. Maybe it got exported with all those jobs to China.

Please note: The two values conservatives were both re-elected. Eisenhower is the only really good example from that group. Nixon won re-election but later resigned. Ford and Bush lost in their re-election bids.

Actually this whole discussion is really a distraction, quite frankly. The press is great at these types of things. Instead of criticizing the current Administration who is in power (and making fools of themselves on a weekly basis) they want to entertain these prognostications about potential candidates - 2 to3 years from now and bash the Republican party in the mean time.

So Rationalist hear this: The GOP is not doomed. Why? Sooner or later a candidate will emerge that can articulate an alternative to the Democrats and their high unemployment, high priced, pathetic economy and wishy-washy unsafe idealistic foreign policy.
