Finally eminent domain reform? "Libertarians applaud Rep. Wes McKinley (D-HD 64), who will be introducing a bill designed to restore the sovereignty of Colorado by removing the blanket consent (CRS 3-1-101 and 3-1-102) given to the U.S. government to acquire land within our state."

It will be interesting to see how fast this bill gets tabled. We have had several attempts at Eminent Domain reform in Colorado, none of them that I know of ever made it out of committee.

A quick history lesson (feel free to confirm all of this) 1953: Fearful of plans to nationalize Iran's oil industry, the C.I.A. stateges it's first successful coup d'etat overthrowing the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadeq (operation TPAJAX). The elected government was replaced by an American puppet regime led by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi commonly referred to as simply "the Shah". The next 26 years of Iran's history was marred by brutal oppression at the hands of the Shah as American oil companies made huge profits on cheap Iranian crude.

1979: Throughout the Shah's 26 year reign in Iran, fundamentalist Islamic and anti-American sentiments were fomenting. The volatile mixture finally hit the boiling point in 1979 and erupted in the form of the Iranian Islamic Revolution during which 52 American hostages were taken from the US Embassy in Iran and held for 444 days.

1980: Iraq invades Iran. The U.S. armed both sides of the conflict and provided intelligence to Saddam Hussein that was used to pinpoint the locations of Iranian troops to be sprayed with mustard gas. An estimated 1 million Arabs were killed during the 8 year Iran-Iraq war.

1980s: The U.S. trains Osama bin Laden and fellow terrorists to kill Soviets (who invaded Afghanistan in 1980). The CIA provides Osama bin Laden with $3 billion.

1982: During February 1982 the U.S. State Department removed Iraq from its list of states supporting international terrorism. It had been included several years earlier because of ties with several Palestinian nationalist groups, not Islamicists sharing the world view of al-Qaeda.

1983: The White House secretly gives Iran weapons to kill Iraqis (remember the "Iran-Contra" hearings in 1986?)

1984: In spite of UN reports confirming Iranian allegations that Iraq had been using chemical warfare weapons in the Iran-Iraq war, the U.S. restored formal relations with Iraq in November 1984, but the U.S. had begun, several years earlier, to provide it with intelligence and military support (in secret and contrary to this country's official neutrality).

1987: An Iraqi Mirage F-1 fighter jet fires two Exocet AM39 air-to-surface missiles into the USS Stark. 37 American seamen are killed.

1988: The USS Vincennes mistakes an Iran Air passenger jet for an enemy aircraft and shoots it down with a missile. All 290 civilians on board are killed.

1990: Iraq invades Kuwait using weapons from the U.S.

1991: Under U.N. authority, U.S. forces enter Iraq (Operation Desert Storm). Bush re-instates the dictatorship of Kuwait. The U.S. admit that their estimates of Iraqi dead exceed 750,000.

1991-2003: U.S. planes bomb Iraq on a weekly basis. U.N. estimates 500,000 Iraqi children die from bombing and sanctions.

2000-01: The U.S. gives the oppressive Taliban-ruled government of Afghanistan $245 Million in aid.

2000: October 2000 the US destroyer USS Cole is bombed by terrorists (al Qaeda suspected) while in Yemen (the ancestral home of al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden). 17 US sailors are killed.

2001: On September 11, Osama bin Laden uses his expert CIA training to engineer the murder over 3,000 Americans (9-11).

2001: After their refusal to turn over suspected terrorist, Osama bin Laden, the U.S. invades Afghanistan overthrowing the Taliban-ruled government. Guerrilla opposition continues.

2003: The U.S. invades Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom), ousting dictator Saddam Hussein and installing a foreign dictator (U.S. provisional authority chief L. Paul Bremer) in his place. Guerrilla opposition kills more U.S. troops during 2003 than were killed during the first three years of the Vietnam War.

Does Ron Paul really represent the libertarian party? Ron Pauls stance on the war in the middle east is that we deserved what we got on 911 because we stick our nose in their business.

I disagreee, if we have free trade around the world, like we all want, our businessmen will tend to hurt some feelings as we continue to win this zero sum game. Our military must have the freedom to kick ass when needed.

I want open trade but that comes with an asskicking military.

Actual news from the capital Okay, so while the rest of the posts argue over what a Libertarian is, I would like to thank Rick for posting this news which has not been covered by the main-stream media. I had no idea for instance that anyone was considering repealing the draconian 'blue laws' concerning the sale of alcohol on Sundays - - in Colorado, you can 'drink and drive' (drink booze at a bar then drive home), but not 'drive and drink' (buy booze at a store and then drive home BEFORE drinking). It is about time that this law was repealed, and so again, thank-you Rick for bringing this to my attention. I don't know much about Libertarians, but I've heard the word associated a lot with Ron Paul's campaign, and reading this post has made me think - as has Ron Paul. I'm going to do a bit more research on the Libertarian Part. It is about time that there was a party that represented those of us who fall in between the two extreme positions taken by the Democrats and Republicans (I don't need a political party to give my money to the religion of THEIR choice, or tell me what I can - or cannot put into my body, nor do I need a political party to 'invest' my money in a retirement scheme, or some doomed to fail health care scheme). I can't help but think that we (people with views similar to mine - and apparently the Libertarians) actually make up the majority in this country, but I/we never knew that there was a political choice for us - the silent majority. So again, thank-you Rick, and thank-you 'Colorado Confidential' for giving a place for this voice. It's nice to know that there is someone reporting the news (Rick), and some place where I can go to find it ('Colorado Confidential').

Libertarians: Peace and Freedom Progressives and libertarians can benefit from talking more and realizing what we have in common and where we differ.

Libertarians are strongly pro-peace and against American military intervention abroad and our excessive military spending. We opposed the Vietnam War and the Iraq War, along with myriad U.S. interventions in other countries.

Libertarians support a genuine free market, but in many cases oppose big corporations: the corporations receiving billions of dollars in subsidies for ethanol and war spending, the corporations receiving unjustified monopolies in banking, cable TV, or other services.

Libertarians have opposed the drug war every day from the beginning. Legalizing marijuana, freeing the pot prisoners in our jails, and ending U.S. intervention against poppy and cocoa farmers in other countries is what we call a good start.

Unlike many progressives, our love of freedom and distrust of government extends to health care, education, and retirement as well, so we may differ on these issues. There are still many issues where we can work together and respectfully.

-- Martin L.
Grow up Chris P.!!! Chris P.; you amaze me!

Just compare all of the media coverage that liberals and conservatives get to the tiny bit that Libertarians receive. You think that's fair?!?!? I applaud Colorado Confidential for including their voice!!!! And I would like to see it continue.

Then you compare libertarianism to anarchy! Buy a dictionary and stop embarrassing yourself! Anarchists want NO government. Libertarians promote a Constitutionally limited government whose primary task is to ensure that EVERYONE enjoys their FULL civil and human rights. That's called a "free" society. Where "grown-ups" take responsibility for - and are held accountable for - their actions. But you apparently still want a "Nanny State" to tell you what you can and can not do (e.g., how to use your cell phone or ATV). Just because you still seek parental supervision (from the government) doesn't mean that the rest of us do! So grow up Chris P. - and start accepting some responsibility!

liberty vs power I am a Libertarian because I oppose some people having arbitrary power over other people. Someone wants to control cell phone usage. This is minor compared to controlling what money you earn and how much the government takes. Yet it is indicative of the same mentality of "I think I know better what is best for you than you do."

Libertarians let each person decide for him or herself what is better. And as long as that decision does not include violence, the threat of violence, or fraud they are at liberty to move ahead on each decision. And take the personal consequences of those decisions without a government bailing them out of those consequences.

Buried in the Avalance While I appreciate Rick pointing out the few bills that may help with freedom, I think the benefit from these will be buried under the avalance of anti-freedom legislation and governer decrees (ie. the union give away).

The Libertarians are correct; the more freedom we have the better off we are. This country became rich from the growth engendered by our previously mostly Libertarian government. Hopefully Ron Paul will get elected and the federal government can set an example for our state legislature.

Dems preserve personal liberty? I am not sure if the Democrats really preserve any personal liberties. The most recent examples include the smoking ban. The Denver City council was also opposed to the marijuana initiative.

I am also hard pressed to believe that the majority of republicans care about economic freedom. Owens was a supporter of Ref C and D, and don't even get me started on Bush and his 6 years of record breaking spending with a republican congress/senate.
