Aurora would like for you to believe the All American City added the benefit in February, but the truth is that employees in long term, same-sex relationships are still waiting. An amendment added to the proposal by Councilman Fitzgerald, who at first opposed the constitutionality of the benefits, added all employees in a committed relationship out of fairness to heterosexual couples. Though Colorado's Common Law Marriage is so lenient that these employees would be eligible for benefits, Councilman Fitzgerald obstructed the voted until this amendment was added and approved. Now, the Human Resources Department has been tasked to "define" the family unit before the program can be implemented. Since the Supreme Court has been unable to come up with an answer, how do we expect an HR department to complete this daunting task? Essentially, Councilman Fitzgerald accomplished his goal. Councilman Fitzgerald, I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt, but as of yet, my family and I don't have any benefits.
