We're hard-wired for a "spiritual" approach to the world anyway. I believe these polls reflect a shift away from the religion ABOUT Jesus to more of an appreciation to the religion OF Jesus: concern for the poor, a shift away from narrow tribalism and a focus on a lyrical rather than tragic view of reality.

The church got sidetracked into being a bureaucratic Salvation Machine after it merged with the Roman Empire in 325 AD. It has reached its limit and it has long since crumbled away to the fundamentalist margins.

Like looking into the night sky at the starlight that left space aeons ago, we are now living in a totally different universe.
