I agree, Sue, and there are some interesting models experimenting with how to finance investigative reporting via philanthropy, like our parent organization Center for Independent Media as well as ProPublica, and a new reader-based funding model at spot.us.

While a connected and participatory information ecology offers great and still unforseen benefits,
we're still lacking the principle thing here: committed dollars to pay for the
hard work for long-range investigative and beat reportage. A person can't accomplish
this work in their spare time. We're needing the kind of
thing that exposes breaches in ethics of those in power. We see what
decades of news resources available for this has delivered.
