VIDEO of U.S. Rep. Smith: Obama is peddler of death

The 24th GOP presidential debate in Tampa, Fla., Monday night drove home what has become more clear in the past few weeks: The Republican Party, at this stage in time, is not united — at least when it comes to who they think should lead the country instead of Barack Obama.

That point was given urgency Monday morning by fiery Congressman Chris Smith, who told a room of anti-abortion activists and lobbyists at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C., that Obama’s liberal stance on abortion rights makes him, essentially, a killer.

The American Independent previously reported that the FRC conference was host to super-charged rhetoric. During the event, the entire medical community was accused of eugenics, and Obama was accused of promoting a culture of death.

“We’ve got to warn everybody that disunity within our party – those who are Republicans or those men and women of good faith and good will on the Democrat side and independents – we may have some candidate disappointment from time to time and we might say, ‘Oh that’s not the best candidate we can put forward,’” Smith said. “We have to unite. Obama is the enemy of life, as is his people.”

The New Jersey Republican, currently on his 16th term in Congress, also excoriated the Obama administration for endorsing Kenya’s recently rewritten constitution, which amended a longtime ban on abortion with a exception to preserve the health of the mother. Smith has accused the administration of paying extensive amounts — more than the $2 million Obama’s ambassador reported spending on civic education around the constitutional reform — for the purpose of lobbying the constitutional makers to “not allow the unborn child to enjoy personhood.”

“We lost Kenya, in Washington,” Smith said.

Mother Jones reported last spring that Smith himself was involved in “politicking” in Kenya over the abortion clause — on the taxpayer’s dime.

From Mother Jones:

Smith wasn’t just meeting with Kenyan politicians and activists during his time in East Africa—he was actively politicking. On March 21, Smith spoke at an event on the new constitution sponsored by the Kenya Christian Professional Forum in Limuru, a town about 35 miles outside Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. A staffer for the US-based group Center for Reproductive Rights, which recently opened an office in Nairobi, took notes during the speech. In it, the congressman reportedly called for “a world free of abortion.” Smith also accused “pro-abortion NGOs” of having “hijacked” the maternal mortality issue in order to legalize the killing of the unborn, CRR says.

Outside conference doors was a voter-registration booth and a presidential voter guide (PDF) from FRC Action. FRC has already endorsed candidate Rick Santorum.
