It would overwhelmingly clog our legal system as lawyers and the courts were forced to reinterpret every Colorado law and regulation that contains the word “person,” impacting literally thousands of laws—from when property rights are granted, to traffic laws, to access to the courts. It would create unheard-of government intrusion into the private lives of women and men.

Amendment 48 is an extreme ballot measure that would give a fertilized, unimplanted egg the same rights as full humans. By giving constitutional rights to a fertilized egg, it would lead to the ban of all abortions, even to save the life of the mother and in cases of rape or incest.

It would ban all hormonal forms of birth control (including the Pill and emergency contraception) and IUDs. It would eliminate some cancer treatments and embryonic stem cell research and threaten in vitro fertilization .

In the three countries in the world where “personhood of the egg” is law (Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Chile) doctors are restricted from–and commonly criminally investigated for– treating life-threatening and agonizing ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages. Women are refused treatment for extremely serious medical conditions in their early stages, and their rates of infertility, trauma, hospitalization, and death are much higher than in nearby countries.

How can you stop this? By telling your friends, families, co-workers, churchmembers, classmates, and others about this amendment. Put a sign in your yard, write letters to the editor, and donate to the cause.
